Every now and again, something happens in sports that defies logic and reminds fans why they love watching them so much. While sometimes, these unbelievable feats are revisited in films, rarely does something ridiculous that happened in a movie occur in real life long after the film was released.
This past weekend, the Nationwide Tour's BMW Charity Pro-Am in Greer, South Carolina, was a golf match for the ages. Heading into the final hole, Cameron Percy was leading the pack at 16 under par, but missed a 10-foot putt for par that opened the doors for fellow Australian Nick Flanagan to make history.
On his second shot on the 18th hole, Flanagan crushed the ball far over the green and into a cameraman. The ball miraculously ricocheted onto the green and barely missed rolling right into the cup. He easily sank the putt that gave him a birdie on the hole and tied him for the lead with Percy, forcing a playoff.
"Sometimes it's better to be lucky rather than good, obviously. You've got to take every break you can get out here," Flanagan told The Associated Press. "The birdie putt was pretty much straight away and I had a pretty good read. As soon as I hit it I felt like it was going in. It bobbled on the way, but it had enough speed to get there."
After keeping pace with each other for the first two playoff holes, Percy pulled away with the win on the third.
With a big check in the backseat of his car, Flanagan tweeted that he felt like Happy Gilmore driving home after the big match, referring to the unbelievable shot Adam Sandler's character hit in the popular comedy.
