After pulling a commanding lead, United States falters on final day of Ryder Cup

Heading into the final day of competition for this year's Ryder Cup, the U.S. team was confident. They had dominated the tournament over the previous days and had a six-point lead on the Europeans. They were competing on their home turf, in Medinah, Illinois, with their "13th man," the enthusiastic American crowd, cheering them on. Everything seemed to be falling into place.

Yet as Sunday wore on, the Europeans began to climb, sinking holes and maintaining a composure that seemed beyond the U.S. team. At the close of play, José María Olazábal and his teammates from across the Atlantic had won, 14.5-13.5.

A number of veteran players for the U.S. team missed straightforward shots that cost them their matchups, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk. On the other side of the green, their motivated counterparts, especially the man who sealed his team's victory, Martin Kaymer, held strong at critical points.

The captain for the Americans, Davis Love III, has faced criticism since the match for his perceived carelessness in selecting his team's lineup.

In an interview with The New York Times, Love said, "We're all kind of stunned. We were playing so well. We just figured it didn't matter how we sent them out there."

Love added that he would be second-guessing himself for "a long time" after the loss.

Meanwhile, the European team has been celebrating an astonishing round of play and many golf analysts have touted this year's cup as one of the greatest in history. What time will tell has yet to be seen, but this weekend certainly featured one of the most impressive Ryder Cup comebacks to date.

As athletes are upgrading their gear for the new season, they need to make sure they are taking good care of their investments. To do this, athletes everywhere are using Cleatskins cleat covers so they don't need to worry about damaging their cleats or other special athletic footwear, such as cycling, basketball, wrestling, cheer and volleyball shoes. Cleatskins make great gifts for athletes and are fashioned to fit a wide selection of athletic footwear.
